Green Knolls Historical Society & Garden Club

The Green Knolls Historical Society & Garden Club is proud to archive the architectural, cultural and social history of Green Knolls, a quiet suburban neighborhood celebrating its 90th Anniversary in Westchester County, NY.

Built atop a leafy knoll off Scarsdale Avenue, and situated between Scarsdale Village and Leewood Golf Club, to this day, Green Knolls, which was established in 1924, has retained much of its original architectural style and character.

Most of the homes in Green Knolls were built in the 1920s in either the Tudor or the Colonial style with a few exceptions, like a stately Mediterranean style home, also built in the 1920s, which retains its stunning original Terra Cotta roof. Additional homes have been added to the neighborhood since its establishment in the 1920s.

In the early days of Green Knolls, it was common for residents to gather with neighbors in the evening to play bridge and share stories of the day after the short commute home from New York City. This community ethos evolved over the years, culminating in the annual Progressive Dinner, first organized by Pat & Vic Ricci formerly of Stratford Road.

Annually, the civic association also hosts an Easter Parade and a Tree Lighting Ceremony at Christmastime.

Because of its proximity to the private Leewood Golf Club - several homes border the golf course - many Green Knolls residents have maintained memberships at Leewood while also enjoying the town's public Country Club know as Lake Isle.

And like many well-groomed neighborhoods in its day, from the 1920s through the 1970s, Green Knolls residents often enjoyed the use of the Kelly family's private tennis court which was situated on the family's property at the corner of Downer and Scarsdale Avenues.

The Green Knolls Historical Society & Garden Club is a volunteer organization devoted to archiving and celebrating Green Knolls' rich history and encouraging the neighborhood's continued Greening.
